Script Doctor Eric
So you think your screenplay should have made the quarter finals? Well, you’re not alone. Although there were 25 quarter finalists, nearly 75 writers DID NOT make the cut.
But, I could have made a mistake.
When I would enter screenplay contests, I was always upset that there was no way to appeal the decision. Where is my due process? Don’t we live in America? (I wouldn’t say this if the contest were overseas…)
So here’s the deal. If you truly, truly feel that you screenplay should have made the quarter finals of the competition, send me an email ([email protected]) with the subject, “Screenplay Competition Appeal” followed by the name of your screenplay.
And also include the following:
1. In the body of the email, write your name, the name of your screenplay, a 1-2 sentence logline, and a 1-2 paragraph (maximum) explanation of why you feel your screenplay should have made the quarter finals.
2. Attach a query letter for the screenplay to the email. The query letter should be in Microsoft Word format.
3. Attach a 1 page, single spaced synopsis of your screenplay to the email. The synopsis should also be in Word format.
Why the query letter and synopsis? So I can get a sense of how you see the film. It’s also good practice – if you wish to sell your screenplay you’ll have to do these anyway.
Somewhere in your email, also include the name of your favorite screenplay – not movie, but screenplay – and tell me in one or two sentences what you like about it.
And…that’s it! You have until noon on May 4th to follow the instructions above and send me your appeal. As long as you have followed all the instructions above, I will reconsider your script, giving it another read, and letting you know my thoughts.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns.
Onward!
-Eric
